Who is Janet?
With over 35 years of experience in design and creativity, Janet has consistently pursued unique and meaningful projects.
For 13 years, she taught textiles and design & technology in secondary schools but often felt constrained by the limitations of the education system. Seeking a more open and innovative approach, she embarked on an independent journey that led to the creation of Feed My Creative (FMC) in 2016. This social enterprise provides a platform free from traditional constraints, enabling dynamic learning experiences and meaningful community engagement.
In 2018, FMC was registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC), reinforcing its commitment to sustainability by repurposing fabrics and materials while integrating creative practices with environmental awareness. Through her work, Janet has received multiple awards and recognitions and has been fully dedicated to FMC for the past three years.
As an artist and curator, Janet has developed and led two interactive exhibitions—one during the Birmingham 2022 Festival and another, a two-month installation at the National Memorial Arboretum in 2023. These exhibitions combined textiles and electronics to create immersive storytelling experiences, allowing visitors to engage with fabric-printed images through touch-activated audio narratives. Building on this success, Janet has also showcased a selection of her works at various locations throughout Birmingham.
As an extension of these exhibitions, she recently published a book celebrating her mother and close connections, documenting their journey from the Caribbean to the UK and honouring the pioneers of the Windrush Generation.
Currently pursuing an MA in Craft at Manchester Metropolitan University, Janet continues to expand her skills and push creative boundaries. With an exciting future ahead as both an artist and entrepreneur, she remains dedicated to exploring new ways to merge sustainability, technology, and traditional textile techniques.
Doing creative differently …
“Storytelling with my work is something that I want people to engage with, to give them an alternative voice and be thought provoking.”
