A Project for Socially Excluded Young People and Adults
This initiative began as a pilot project in 2019, aiming to create a supportive and creative environment for socially excluded young people and adults. With the decline of practical subjects in schools, we sought to offer hands-on activities that would inspire young people to explore their potential in design and technology. At the same time, the project provided adults with an opportunity to relieve stress, reduce anxiety, and connect with others through creativity.
Using a variety of recycled materials, participants were encouraged to develop their creativity, experiment with design concepts, and learn new skills. As specialised and costly equipment is often inaccessible, we introduced simple electronic kits that enabled both young people and adults to practise new skills at home—repurposing items that would typically be discarded.
To make these opportunities more accessible, we offered low-cost projects, including e-textile starter sewing kits, allowing participants to continue developing their skills at their own pace. These activities extended beyond the classroom, enabling individuals—regardless of their academic ability or background—to experiment, problem-solve, and explore new ways of working.
Some of the creative projects included:
Bluetooth speakers crafted from recycled ice cream tubs and denim jeans
Interactive light displays, where simple stitches and LED circuits brought printed designs to life
Beyond creativity, these sessions provided a therapeutic outlet, helping participants to unwind, build confidence, and form meaningful connections with others. Learning new skills in a relaxed, social setting not only supported personal growth but also introduced fresh approaches to problem-solving and innovation.
This project has been tried, tested, and proven to be an excellent way to engage both young people and adults—offering a sense of achievement, valuable life skills, and a finished product they can proudly take home.
